The Libyan Iron and Steel Company is a prominent industrial enterprise in Libya. Situated near Misrata, just 210 kilometers east of Tripoli, it spans an area of 1,200 hectares.
The company’s design capacity is 1.700 million tons of liquid steel per year, utilizing domestic natural gas in a direct reduction process of iron pellets.
The foundation stone was laid on 18/09/1979, marking a significant milestone in the development of Libya’s heavy manufacturing sector. The production units officially commenced operations on 09/09/1989, heralding the company’s entry into the production phase.
The company comprises various production units, including:
- Direct Reduction Plant (3 units)
- Steel Melt Shops (2 units)
- Bar and Rod Mills (4 lines)
- Bar Rolling Mills (2 units)
- Light and Medium Section Mill
- Hot Strip Mill
- Cold Strip Mill

Recognizing the importance of meeting customer demands and establishing a strong presence in international steel markets, the company has implemented a rigorous quality management system based on international standards (ISO 9001/2000). To ensure the effectiveness of this system and achieve its desired goals, the Libyan Iron and Steel Company was awarded the prestigious Europe Award of Quality in 1998, followed by the attainment of the ISO 9001/2000 international quality certificate on 25/03/2002.
